The Weather Gets a Vote
Control and non-control
Pre-Illinois, I used to only think about weather’s affect on me.
Not anymore, planting dahlias with Tricia.
With her, my gig is to dig.
Then she (dahlia expert/nerd) adds in helpers and carefully puts the tubers in.
I fill it back in and then… it’s just weather and waiting.
Teaching’s like that.
Preparing the space.
Helping students.
Showing up with humanity and consistency.
But
I can’t force growth any more than I can make dahlias bloom.
In classrooms and gardens, so much of what matters most is weather.
I’m responsible for planting, not weather.
How would you finish it?
Teaching, I’m responsible for ______, but not ______.
See you in class,
J

Great analogy. Helps keep it all in perspective!
Brilliant. Our circumstances are often mostly or entirely beyond our control. But how we frame and navigate them is entirely within our control.
